Upcoming Events and Announcements
1) University Wide Site Licensed Software Update
RefWorks, a web based bibliographic software package, will shortly be available
for student, faculty, and staff use. In addition, Maple (a mathematical
software package) and ChemDraw site licenses have been renewed. All of these
packages are available for free to the faculty while any campus computing lab
can have them installed for student use. Students can install RefWorks and
ChemDraw on their system. Visit the software portal at

2) WebCT being phased out for Sakai
OIT has just announced that the WebCT course management system will be replaced
by Sakai for Summer 2007. Sakai is an open-source collaboration system, which
is intended to support both instruction and research. It has been in use at
Rutgers since Fall 2005.
For this Fall, Sakai now includes:
* access to photo rosters
* ability to look up netids when adding users
* interface to Library eReserves
The version for Summer 2007 will be a new major release, with a number of new

4) IT Events Calendar Available in RULINK
OIRT is maintaining an "IT Events" calendar in RULink. This calendar was
created to provide long term view (up to a year) at the planned IT events
available internal/external to Rutgers. This calendar can be overlaid onto
existing RULink calendars. For more information or to submit IT events for the

5) MAGPI Banned Books Virtual Panel Discussion (9/25)
This virtual panel discussion will be held on September 25th from 10:00am to

6) Social Sciences Virtual Forum (10/5)
MAGPI, our regional coordinator for Internet2 activities, will host a
videoconferenced forum on Social Science topics on October 5th from
9:30-11:30AM. OIRT will provide a location to participate in the forum from its

7) High Performance Computing Event at UMDNJ-Newark (11/2)
UMDNJ and NJEDge.Net, the New Jersey Higher Education Network are hosting a
half day educational event on November 2 focusing on high performance computing
hardware/software/network organization and implementation. More information,

8) On-line IT Training for the Rutgers Community
On-line IT Training for Rutgers Students, Faculty and Staff from Sun
Microsystems, as part of its Sun Academic Initiative, and Hewlett-Packard are
offering independent programs with FREE on-line courses. Topics include systems
administration, programming, applications, technology solutions, management,
communication and leadership development. In addition, vouchers for 60% off
Sun Microsystems certification exams are available from OIRT (email:
oirt@rutgers.edu).
