Upcoming Events and Announcements

HPC Community at Rutgers
High Performance Computing (HPC) is a collective term to describe computational facilities that have the capacity to outperform the current high-end standalone machines. HPC facilities can vary from massively parallel processing supercomputers to clusters of commodity personal computers. Rutgers has a rich history of providing facilities and expertise to encourage the adoption of HPC technologies in support of its research and education goals. More information about HPC is available at http://oirt.rutgers.edu/res/hpc-resources.html.

Faculty interested in pursuing grant opportunities related to http://www.magpi.net/resources.html#grants and http://www.ngi.gov/funding/. If you wish, OIRT staff can help you prepare your grant proposal with regards to IT issues. Send email to oirt@rutgers.edu for more information. Here is a short list of unique agencies where Internet2 grants are available:

If you or someone in your department uses or plans to use video conferencing, mark your calendar for the Video Conferencing "Interoperability Demo & Access Grid" on September 27th in Busch Student Center's Center Hall. This OIRT and NJEDge.net event will be streamed live and archived. Vendor displays will be available in the International Lounge. We are anticipating that Polycom, Tandberg, Sony, LifeSize, Codian, and inSors will be represented.

Update: Internet2 fall meeting in Philadelphia (Sept 19-22)
Internet2's Fall member meeting is being held September 19-22 in nearby Philadelphia, PA. Planned presentations include topics such as:

A complete listing of the anticipated sessions is located at http://events.internet2.edu/2005/fall-mm/agenda.cfm?event=239 Check out http://events.internet2.edu/2005/fall-mm/for more information. Note that Rutgers is a member of Internet2 and therefore faculty and staff would pay member fees.

Question of the Month
In preparation for an Internet2 Day at Rutgers during the Spring, OIRT is hoping to identify early adopters of Internet2 Research Projects or Initiatives who would take part in planning or be an active participant during this special event. If someone in your department is working on a project involving Internet2 or a project that is enabled by Internet2 (high bandwidth), please ask them to contact OIRT at oirt@rutgers.edu

Faculty Liaison Forum
We are currently evaluating bibliographic management software programs, with an eye towards getting a site license for the university. Endnote is the program most commonly used at Rutgers. However, conversations with other institutions have led us to consider RefWorks, a web-based alternative. It includes popular features like "Write-N-Cite" and importing from many databases. Also, it has possible advantages, such as ease of use from multiple locations, ease of updating software as it is done centrally, ease of sharing references with others, and support for document types other than Word (e.g. TeX, Word Perfect, etc.). We expect to be working with the Libraries to pull together an evaluation. In the meantime, RefWorks has kindly given us test access until the end of October. Anyone at Rutgers can create a RefWorks new "user login" by following links from http://refworks.com/ Note that you need to be on RUNet address space in order to create your account and use the group code (provided in email) for non-RUNet use. We would appreciate it if some of you would try RefWorks and send feedback to oirt@rutgers.edu
