Upcoming Events and Announcements

Upcoming Events and Announcements
OIRT representatives are available to come to your department or unit's faculty meeting to give a short (15 minutes) presentation on instructional and research technology at the University, both in OIRT and elsewhere. This will be an opportunity for your faculty to meet OIRT staff, provide feedback on faculty technology issues, and identify ways OIRT & Partners can help.

OIRT is in the process of revising its web site http://oirt.rutgers.edu. It will be a single place where you can find information about key technologies for instruction and research at Rutgers. It will cover services from OIRT, as well as with other units at Rutgers and elsewhere on the Internet. The site organization is based upon feedback gathered from faculty interviews and meetings conducted during the Spring semester. Further feedback on content, ease-in-use or missing information would be appreciated.

The "Software Collection Development" process brings Maple and ChemDraw site licenses to the Rutgers Community. Please visit the MSSG Software Portal https://software.rutgers.edu for free download and further information. Special acknowledgement goes to the following departments for sharing in the community effort to make these site licenses possible:

Internet2's Fall member meeting is being held September 19-22 in nearby Philadelphia, PA. Internet2 members are conducting a wide variety of research and development in disciplines such as the arts, humanities, health services and other sciences. Internet2 project topics include cutting-edge videoconferencing, collaboration, and K-12 outreach. Check out http://events.internet2.edu/2005/fall-mm/ for more information. Note that Rutgers is a member of Internet2 and therefore faculty and staff would pay member fees.

The Gigaconference Videoconferencing Event is being planned by the Internet2 Commons and Codian Corp. and will take place on 5 August 2005 from 12-4:00pm EDT (GMT-4). Gigaconference organizers anticipate that approximately 20 sites will participate in this event, which will showcase uses of high-end, high-performance videoconferencing. The event will also be streamed at various speeds. For a list of presenting participants (covering the Arts, Health Services, etc.) and other updates refer to http://commons.internet2.edu/gigaconference.html

If you or your colleagues consider video services at Rutgers an important emerging technology, visit or have your technical staff watch the videostream segments of the June 14th OIRT Technology Meeting "Video Services Available to the Rutgers Community." These clips are available at http://oirt.rutgers.edu/archives/tech050614.html

Question of the Month
There is currently a review of site-licensing opportunities for bibliographic software in hopes of making it available for the Fall Semester. The two products being assessed are EndNote and RefWorks.

A Refworks representative has been invited for July 25th from 11:30am to 1:30pm in the Pane Room of Alexander Library on College Avenue Campus in New Brunswick. As this is short notice, we will also arrange for another day in August (if there is interest) from faculty to review both packages and help us select one to be site licensed.

Please provide names and/or emails of any faculty in your department that would like to help us evaluate both packages. Please RSVP to oirt@rutgers.edu.

Faculty Liaison Forum
Based upon meetings with Deans, Departments, and current feedback, our priorities of services are support for exploration in high performance computing, advanced networking applications and initiatives (Internet2), video and collaboration, software collection development, and resource identification.

Feedback or General Q&A
Please feel free to contact us with questions regarding any IT-related topic. In order to address your needs, we must know about them. You can email OIRT at oirt@rutgers.edu. Note that questions pertaining more directly to a campus, departmental, or partner IT organization will be coordinated with that university unit.
