Video Technologies at Rutgers
Use of video at Rutgers University comprises many different technologies -
videoconferencing, streaming (or Video on Demand-VoD), TV, etc. Please see left margin for video
tools used at Rutgers as well as technical resources.
- Trying to identify whether a particular department has video conferencing capability? or whether there is one nearby?
- Check the Rutgers wide online Video Conferencing directory.
Departments can update their entries in this Video Conferencing Directory while anyone with a netid can view the
technical data.
- Are you getting started with room size video conferencing?
- If you are setting up a video conferencing unit, see specifically
the
Technical Standards section , which recommends both setup options
and a procedure for certifying your system.
- Consider the option of using NJEDge.net Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) services to take advantage of
K-12 outreach connections, to stream your event live, or to conference with more groups than your system can handle.
NJEDge.net coordinates
video services for New Jersey higher education.
This includes making contacts between higher education and the
K-12 AccessNJ community, as well as other institutions such as the
New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Newark Museum.
The Office of Instructional and Research Technology (oirt@rutgers.edu)
can help you make contacts with both NJEDge and the wider
higher education community.
- Do you find your existing video conferences unsatisfactory?
- Because they break up too often or because your system cannot negotiate another site's firewall by using Global Dialing Scheme (GDS).
Then have your staff verify that the technical
standards for video conferencing at Rutgers are met.
- Because browser displays are unreadable at the other sites. Then consider using a second conferencing channel using
"Marratech" desktop software
that would allow computer displays to be projected separate from the regular video conference.
- Because your system cannot use ISDN; you would like to reach more K-12 sites; or you would like to conference with
more sites than your system can handle. Then have your system registered and certified with NJEDge.net as described in the
technical standards.
- Because you would really like to have your conference video taped. Have your staff contact the
TV Production Studio staff to make arrangements.
- Because you would really like to have your conference streamed live for others to view and be recorded for later viewing. Then take advantage of
the multipoint control unit at NJEDge.net. Please contact oirt@rutgers.edu for information on how best to use these services.
- For other options, please contact oirt@rutgers.edu or call us at 732-445-1438.
