WEB DEVELOPMENT

An important component of many research programs at Rutgers is the development of a web site to support the organization and exchange of information and ideas. These web sites may be project-specific or simply to support a particular research group. Rutgers faculty and researchers have many web development resources available to them. The following is a summary of many of those resources.

On-line Guides
University Relations has developed a university-scale web resource at http://toolkit.rutgers.edu. This site contains university web policies, templates, tips and self-guided training material to help users develop web content quickly.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) maintains a basic guide for web development at the university. The OIT web guide can be found at http://oit.rutgers.edu/websupport.html

Campus web development toolkits (photo galleries, templates, guides, etc.) are available for each campus:

The Unit Computing Specialist (UCS) Toolkit has a basic guide to web resources.

Training
Campus Computing Services - Education Series
Each Campus Computing Services offers hands-on web development classes through their education series.

IDT
Camden's Instructional Design & Technology office offers regular web development classes at http://idt.camden.rutgers.edu/training.htm.

CTAAR
Center for Teaching Advancement and Assessment Research offers web development classes at http://cat.rutgers.edu/workshops/ws_descr_IT.html

Development Assistance
MSSG
Microcomputer Support Services Group (MSSG) provides professional web and database development services for a fee. MSSG's development team can handle complete projects as well as updates to existing sites.

ADDM
The Application Development and Data Management Team (ADDM) within Administrative Computing is responsible for enterprise-wide application development and data management. If a department has a web-based application that is tied into administrative data, please consult with ADDM.

Hiring a Student Web Developer
Many organizations have advertised for student web programmers through the student site http://studentwork.rutgers.edu. There is a great range of student knowledge when it comes to web development. It helps if you review a student's previous development projects to ensure they are commensurate with your expectations.

Other Resources/Utilities
Email Lists
There are a number of Rutgers email lists available to support for web development. These include: To subscribe people should either go to the web page that corresponds to the mailing list (for instance https://email.rutgers.edu/mailman/listinfo/web_announce ) or send e-mail to the list-specific join address (web_announce-join@email.rutgers.edu).

Drive Mapping
In order to ease the editing and transferring of files between your desktop and your campus web server, you can link your web documents to a folder on your desktop. Use the on-line guides to help you through the process:
