Office of Instructional and Research Technology

Stata

Much of the University Community (including CASC, SCJ, RBS, SAS, GSE, SSW, SC&I, EJB, SMLR, and SEBS) along with the Office of Information Technology have joined together in a cooperative effort to begin a site license for Stata. We believe site licenses such as this are important steps towards building a University-wide Site-licensed Software Collection for the Rutgers Community.

Software Highlights

Stata is a data analysis and statistical software package and the MP2 version can take advantage of a dual core desktop for faster execution. To find out “why you should use the Stata statistical package”, click here.

Note that a modest number of Stat Transfer, which ports files between Stata and other packages, licenses are available on Apps.rutgers.edu and in the labs.

Software available to Faculty and Staff

This site license provides for downloads and use on all Rutgers owned machines as well as faculty and staff owned machines. To download the software, visit http://software.rutgers.edu, login with your NetID, and then search for Stata using the search box in the upper right of the page. Stata MP2 is available via software portal for free with MP4 being available for a minimal cost. A couple of groups choose to pay for downloads as they already have purchased sufficient copies.

Student access to Stata

Students can access Stata in the public labs and possibly in departmental labs.

In addition, Apps.rutgers.edu, an OIT University-wide service, provides remote access to software packages like Stata and much more for students, faculty, and staff. Users can just point their browser at http://apps.rutgers.edu/ from their computer whether they are on campus using RUWireless or working from home using a high speed network connection. To review basic documentation for this capability, click here, to learn how to gain access and use Apps. For more information, contact oirt @ rutgers.edu.

Building a User Community

In response to faculty requests, a mail list has been created to foster the Stata User Community at Rutgers. To join, one can subscribe by logging in here. Postings are made to this site to note when new versions are made available via http://software.rutgers.edu , to survey the Stata community, and to provide other updates.

Support

Stata has a built-in “help” function which includes PDF documentation. Additionally, refer to http://stata.com/support/ for their FAQ, News, and more including how to reach their technical support (you can find your serial number in the Stata pull down menu under “About”). Training options include webinars and public training sessions and can be found at http://stata.com/training/onsite-training/

For questions regarding downloading, installing, or re-activating this software, please consult your local unit computing specialist or send email to oirt @ rutgers.edu.
