What is videoblogging?
A videoblog is a personal video log one maintains online, often incorporated into a personal website or blog. Similar to a blog, a videoblog is updated on a regular basis and can be on any topic of interest to the creator. Videobloggers use video, sound, audio, images, and text to create a short but dynamic movie or documentary. Videoblogging has become popular as a way to enhance the ability of expression through rich media.
Who uses videoblogging?
Videobloggers come in a variety of forms. Some enjoy the freedom of personal expression available in video that is lacking in text. Others enjoy experimenting with new technologies or use videoblogging as an easy way of making amateur movies. Videoblogging has greatly increased as technology has made it easier to capture, edit, and distribute video. Recording using digital cameras or cell phones with video capabilities is common among videobloggers. Public websites, such as YouTube, make distribution of videoblogs even easier, and additionally provide a community for videobloggers to comment on and critique each others’ work.
Why should I use videoblogging?
Videoblogging gives students a chance to submit work in a form other than text. Personal reflections, reactions and commentary to course material, and projects can all be completed in a video format. This allows for the incorporation of rich media to enhance the students’ work and learning experiences through creation. Using a communityoriented website, such as YouTube, further allows students and others to comment on work via text or video. Students can create dialogue with each other and the instructor through short videos and commentaries. On an individual basis, students can also create an on-going videoblog to track learning over time, and can use videoblogging as part of an eportfolio.
