Educational Technology

Educational technology is defined by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology as “the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.” In addition to providing pedagogical support to faculty, Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) is responsible for identifying technology that can be used to facilitate and enrich instruction. Our goal is not to stress the use of technology, rather to stress the use of technology appropriately and to align them with learning objectives.

Learning Opportunities

TLT periodically offers workshops on Sakai and other instructional technology tools. These workshops have an open enrollment and are offered online or in person. If you prefer to work face to face, you may schedule a 1 to 1 appointment with an Instructional Designer. Our staff can assist with understanding the different technological tools that are available as well how to incorporate those tools effectively into your course or project sites. Additionally, we have a number of instructional videos, including a recorded “Introduction to Sakai” session that you can view at your convenience.

Course Tools

The various tools that you see on this page have different functions and offer different solutions to different problems. Each of the tools is integrated with Sakai in some way, with many of them being available for use outside of the learning management system.

These are third-party tools that have been integrated into Sakai. Click the corresponding logo to learn more about each item.

ResponseCard RF LCD devices are still compatible with TPC and are available to students through the Rutgers University Bookstore. Course instructors are advised to contact the Bookstore prior to the start of the semester to inform them of how many devices they will need to run their class so they can ensure enough devices are acquired for student purchase.

Respondus

Assessment creation, management, and lockdown browser

Learn more about Respondus

Respondus

Respondus offers two products both of which aid in creating and managing your assessments. Respondus 4.0 is a tool that allows you to author and manage your assessments, while the Lockdown Browser is a custom browser that allows you literally lock down the online testing environment within Sakai, preventing students from moving away from the testing browser to another browser or application on their machine.

Respondus 4.0

Respondus 4.0 is an assessment authoring tool that also allows you to easily manage your assessments and import them into the LMS of your choice. These assessments however can also be printed out as well as used in an online format.

More information on Respondus:

Lockdown Browser

The Lockdown Browser prohibits the tester’s ability to navigate away from the testing environment or to open any other windows or applications during testing. Many instructors find this very helpful in keeping online assessment authenticity. While in the Lockdown Browser, testers view the assessment full screen and cannot minimize the window. The assessment also cannot be closed out until it is submitted for grading. Print, Print Screen, and screen capture functions do not work while the assessment is open and testers are unable to copy and paste anything to/from the assessment. For more information and a complete list of features you can visit the Respondus Lockdown Browser page for more information.
